But I gotta disagree with you on the rest. I'm a fan of Seth's work, "Family Guy" is hilarious (IMO) but this film..... wow. Is it dull. Seth seems to want to make a hard edged comedy version of Don Knotts "Shakiest Gun In The West." It's a weird dichotomy that never works. And good lord.... Hollywood. PLEASE, no more comedies that last more than 90 minutes!!! It's an old expression, but "Soul is the Brevity of Wit" has stood true all these years for a reason. There were only two bits in the entire film that made me actually laugh out loud. The Christopher Lloyd cameo (and the trailer gave that away) and Gilbert Godfried as Lincoln. The rest.... a crashing bore.Richard John Marcejhttp://www.theblabbingbaboon.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-330613451419825697.post-23241876788514999202014-04-25T03:11:50.254-04:002014-04-25T03:11:50.254-04:00As Taylor Swift sang in her early career "I&#...As Taylor Swift sang in her early career "I'm just a girl trying to find her place in this world." It'll be sometime before I catch up to write/draw my review on "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" but I agree, this is one hell of a good film. My first reaction was this was the BEST rendition of a superhero comic book on the big screen. I first started reading Captain America in the early 70's (I was 12yrs old) and this film, to me anyway, was as if they took those pages and story lines and pasted them up on the big screen.

And *Spoiler Alert*

If you would have told my 12 year old self, that actor Robert Redford (who at the time was making great films like "The Sting", "Jerimah Johnson" and "Three Days of the Cpndor) would one day be in a movie and utter the words "Hail Hydra" I'd have said you were crazy!

Yes, we've come a long way since then, comic book movie-wise.Richard J. Because of all of the crap that came out in the first six months, I’d fallen way behind in my moviegoing. I just couldn’t see wasting time/money on dreck. It wasn’t until the last four months when because of all the good releases I was hitting the theater twice, sometimes three times a week!

You’re a better man than me, sitting through any film that has Adam Sandler or any movie made by Shyamalan or Bay. I refuse to piss my money away on them any more.

I agree with your inclusion of “A Good Day To Die Hard” (it was my #1 worst film for much of the year) and would add “Olympus Has Fallen” (loud and pointless), “Star Trek Into Darkness” (an unnecessary and poorly made remake filled with ams characters and situations), “Man Of Steel” (A movie that made Superman boring, had the longest lasting fight scene ever filmed, and wiped out more people and buildings than a hundred action films combined, in the history of movies had)

Making my #1 worst film of 2013 is “The Counselor” for just about everything you said. This also makes, for me, two years in a row where Ridley Scott film finishes #1 for worst of the year (2012’s “Prometheus”) Mr. Scott is dangerously slipping into Shyamalan or Bay.territory.Richard J. Since I saw this last Saturday (haven’t...Thank you. Since I saw this last Saturday (haven’t drawn my review yet) I’ve been wracking my brains. Am I the only person in America who doesn’t think “American Hustle” is the greatest made film in years? This was the Christmas movie I’d most been looking forward to see.I love the cast, have enjoyed Russell’s recent films and thought the subject matter would make a really interesting film. And when I also heard that it was a dark comedy… I couldn’t wait to see it.

And I saw it

And it just…..laid there. The story seemed forced. The characters seemed forced. Nothing really clicked. (Jennifer Lawrence’s character could have been omitted and nothing would have been missed. Well, except for seeing her dressed in sexy 70’s clothes)
And that’s, IMO, what this film is all about. Style over substance. Everyone is so caught up in, oh look, they’re dressed in 70’s clothes, it’s taking place and dealing with 70’s stuff, that they don’t noticed that there’s no story here. Stilted dialogue spoken by actors who deserved better and a tacked on ending that … well, doesn’t really make much sense.

Fortunately, a few days later I did see a very funny dark comedy that kept my interest, a film I wan’t really expecting to like as much (“The Wolf Of Wall Street”) so that kind of made up for my disappointment with AH. I thought the premise was a clever one and gave it a shot. You’re right, it’s not horrible and because they aimed it more for a family crowd I think they left out a lot of obvious jokes/funny bits. Because of the family fare I thought for sure (spoiler alert) that Reggie, since he had a time machine after all, would return before the pilgrim attack and Turkey Chief’s death.

I was the only person in the audience for a 6:55 PM Thursday show and the biggest laughs I got was from Takei. In my case it's not my hatred of anyone, it's just that I don't like to support people/companies that do/say things that stem from a hatred or ignorance. I won't get gasoline from BP because of their environmental ignorance, I won't patronage Chick Filet because of their ignorant (perhaps based in hatred) stance on people who have no effect in they lives, etc… but that's my choice, and frankly it's a choice easily made because of the many choices that are hitting our theater's right now. (and I'm a fan of Harrison Ford's films)
This being the fall/winter movie season, choosing to see a film to go to tomorrow night is easy when I can opt for a "Kill My Darlings" for example over yet another sic-fi story (which I've probably seen or read already in my lifetime, having read a TON of comics and books over the years).
And I figure I can save the money I'd spend on EG and see the IMAX version of "Catching Fire" this week.Richard J.
